So... it’s a few degrees above freezing and we’re standing at 5am in a field in pitch darkness, with the cold seeping from the muddy earth and all through the soles of our boots.

You can't just talk about being ‘one with nature’. You have to do it too... Which is why Michael, Lucy and Steve joined with the Dobunni Grove of Bards, Ovates & Druids, in Bristol, for the Winter Solstice.

The celebration was held in the Great Circle at Stanton Drew. At 113 metres in diameter its the second largest stone circle in Britain, trounced by Avebury in Wiltshire – 347.4 metres in diameter! And despite the chill factor, the light gathering above the hills as the sacred circle came into view was magical...

A group of people in druidic winter attire gathers at the great circle around a lit lantern on grass. Overcast sky, wooded background, somber mood.

People in winter clothing stand outdoors at dawn, a large stone behind. The scene has a calm, contemplative mood, with a dark sky background.

People in warm clothing hold hands in a large outdoor circle, dancing on grass. Overcast sky and trees in the background set a festive mood.

Michael takes a selfie outdoors with Lucy and Steve, all wearing winter clothing. Overcast sky in the background; they appear cheerful, with a field behind them.

Crowd gathers around a small fire in a dark field, under a dim blue dawn sky. People are in winter clothing, creating a solemn atmosphere.
